"The Sunken Tiki was the first painting I did after I permanently moved to the Island of Hawaii. Only the ninth gallery piece I ever painted. The idea came to me while I was snorkeling along the Kona-Kohala coast. I was appreciating the bright yellow tangs - the most common local reef fish in Hawaii schooling around the reef. They moved and took shapes as a group. They're so bright you can see them clearly from the shore as they swim beneath the waves, glimmering as lovely as tropical flowers. My imagination saw them as a Hawaiian Lei draped around the neck of a sunken tiki, hugging an object to avoid the cartoon eel/snake; my own made up undersea menace. The eel-snake protects a lost chest of pirate treasure. My first Hawaii born painting was born, all I had to do was swim to shore, get to my studio, and put brush to canvas." - Brad Parker
