It's the wrap-around cover to a great neo-exotica album by the \"Crazed Mugs\" named \"Find Forbidden Island\". It was painted with that purpose in mind - being an album cover. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\"Forbidden Island\" is my homage to the science fiction films of the 1950's I loved growing up. Its various bizarre elements are all found in many of those movies, like the 1956 sci-fi epic; \"Forbidden Planet\" - that amazing film has many of the fantastic elements found here; Crashed ships, Aliens, Lost civilizations, Mental super powers, and walking automatons carrying beautiful girls. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eForbidden Island's wide horizontal composition allowed me to create different scenes within its frame. On the left is a rustic tropical Tiki Lounge complete with glowing neon sign and two guardian Tiki doormen. Like any good '50's sci-fi film plot, there's a secret Laboratory with a giant tank and floating inside is a huge alien brain. The repulsive purple thing glares outward emitting a ruby-red stream if telekinetic power it uses to serve up an exotic tropical drink cooling in a frosty cold \"Cthulhu Tiki-Mug\". This beverage floats out to the exotic Wahine being carried by an accommodating \"living Tiki\". A giant stone Moai head looks out stoically over a wrecked pirate ship and it's cursed treasure, and further out across the sparkling sunset bay to an equally enormous stone statue carved into the island cliffs of an ancient \"elder sea-god\" like those written about in books by H.P. Lovecraft. These small folks are industrious and build fish ponds, Heiau (temples), bridges, shore breaks, and other things you find in tumbled heaps of lava rock laying about the islands. We are told many of these structures are left unfinished because the Menehunes only come out and night, and if they cannot complete the job in by sunrise they abandon it forever.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI thought about these strange beings after hearing several Hawaiian friends tell tales of them. Some say they'll run up and down tall palm trees in the courtyards of high-end Hotels in Honolulu and startle the guests. One told me their grandmother swears she saw them dancing around a fire on the beach. They looked all black with glowing red eyes. This captured my imagination. The idea came to me that if they are black like cooled Lava, with glowing red eyes maybe they are spirits made of Lava? So they are liquid lava during the day, flowing through the thousands of \"lava tubes\" that riddle the islands. At night they solidify into small rock humanoids with hot molten insides. This explains how they travel around the islands, through lava tubes, and where they disappear to during the day, again lava tubes. This pair of famous paintings depicted a young woman in pink, and a young man in blue. One of the earliest is a lithograph by Frederick Dielman called \"The Widow\", it depicts a cat wearing a ruffled collar. The Idea for \"Tiki Cat\" was born: A cat …wearing an Aloha Shirt, playing the ukulele, standing on Waikiki beach, diamond head in the sunset colored background.  A Tiki-Mug \/ exotic-tropical-drink before it, and a jungle-green lighted Tiki behind it. \"Tiki Cat's\" posed in classical composition. I carefully figured out glamorous Hollywood lighting. Then came the hardest part - the months of slow exact rendering down to every whisker and grain of sand. I wanted this cartoon character to be as perfectly rendered as I could manage. Time was no object. Dollar per hour was not a consideration… much to my agent's horror. All that mattered was that this was going to be an important painting. The best \"souvenir - tourist - Hawaiiana Tiki-Art\" I could possibly make.
